For each month's book, we have listed accompanying action items. We have also shared some meaningful organizations below that are fighting to protect our democracy and are great options if you're looking to volunteer or make a donation.
Common Cause: Sign a petition, canvass in your community, or learn about tools and efforts to protect our right to vote.
Vote Forward: Volunteers can take on the crucial role of encouraging others to vote by writing them nonpartisan letters.
Protect Democracy: This organization shares crucial resources, such as its "Authoritarian Action Watch," and shares tangible steps you can take to defend our form of government.
News Literacy Project: Help ensure that students are able to learn about media bias, spot incorrect information, and find credible sources by supporting media literacy education in schools.
Democracy Forward: Its team has fought, and won, many important battles against the current administration!
Defend our free press. Donate to public media outlets like NPR and PBS after they lost federal funding. Support independent journalism and hyperlocal news. Reach out to your elected officials regarding the weaponization of the FCC.
Be a visible and vocal ally. One successful strategy for authoritarian leaders is to find a group to scapegoat and serve as the source of everyone's problems. We cannot allow divisive language and hateful actions flourish. Show up outside immigration offices to show support for our Haitian neighbors, and call your senator and urge them to pass H.R. 1689 and extend temporary protected status for three more years. Defend rights for transgender individuals. And whenever you hear an entire religious, ethnic, or racial being villified based on the actions of the few, speak up.
